Who Writes This Stuff?

The Unofficial Nikon P80 Weblog is run by p80bob, an advanced amateur photographer, former broadcaster and retired copywriter/producer who left the Big City and moved to the middle of an Illinois cornfield. It’s a move he expected to regret but has grown to love — lots of unusual photo opps here!

Bob Says…

I bought my Nikon Coolpix P80 at the end of May 2008, less than a month after it hit the stores. Here’s why it was a tough decision…

When I started looking for a point-and-shoot camera with a humongous zoom I discovered three things:

  1. The P80 was so new there wasn’t much info about it online.
  2. What little info I found was totally confusing and mostly very negative — much of it written by people who expected a no-brainer-point-‘n’-shoot that would deliver DSLR-quality images and got a highly advanced “bridge camera” instead.
  3. There were no professional reviews published anywhere. The P80 was just too new and the authoritative review sites hadn’t gotten to it yet.

Aaarrrghhhh! Now What?

So I wondered: is this a good camera or what? After all, it is a Nikon. Would they build a lemon?

I have other Nikon cameras and didn’t think Nikon would put their name on a turkey. And the P80 has most of the stuff I was looking for, so I bought one.

Then I decided to build this web site to help other people learn more about the P80 so you can make an informed decision whether it’s for you or not.

Most of us, before we drop 350 US smackers or more on a toy like this, are gonna seriously wonder, “Should I buy a Nikon P80, a Canon S5 IS, a Panasonic TZ5A, a Sony or something else?” Perhaps what you find here will help you figure out a good answer.

So enjoy, please leave comments on the blog and share your pictures with us via a link or two.

Happy picture-making!

Bob
